December 5 is annually observed by the United Nations as International Volunteer Day, a day meant to celebrate and promote the work of volunteers among communities, United Nations agencies, and more.

This year’s campaign thanks volunteers worldwide who have been at the forefront of medical, community and societal responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Last year, there were 8,282 UN Volunteers who served in 54 United Nations missions, agencies, funds and programs worldwide.
  • Globally, 13,186 online volunteers served virtually.
  • 29% of UN Volunteers on-site were under the age of 29, and 51%of volunteers were women.
