1976 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
This 1976 Chevrolet Corvette donated to American Cancer Society was made out of the sunny state of California. Specifically, this corvette is part of the classification of the C3 group. C3 group represents the line of cars that was released between 1968 and 1982. What this means, is that it was the third time the Corvette model had major body and internal changes made to it. In particular, this model is one of Corvettes Stingray models. The Stingray name comes from its aero-dynamic, low-riding, sleek body look. Influenced by the sleek, gracefulness of a stingray swimming in the ocean. The Stingray model was the Corvette’s signature model until it was discontinued after the 1976 model. Yes, this means the ‘76 model was the last year the Stingray model was manufactured.

Why Was It Discontinued?
During 1976 the US was just getting over the ‘73-’75 global economic recession. In addition, the 1973 oil crisis was a large part to do with this recession. In response to all of this, gas prices shot up, and forced car manufacturers to look at the types of vehicles they were making. As a result, high performance sports cars that burned a lot of fuel were no longer as attractive as they once were. Consequently, the company was under pressure to create a more environmentally friendly and higher safety rating car at this time. While Chevrolet did not want to lose their sports model entirely, they decided to make some changes. So, the most noticeable change was to take the Stingray name out completely to make it sound less like a high end sports car.
What Makes It Special Today?
Because the Stingray name was removed, many believe this makes the 1976 model special, and possibly more attractive than other models. Now, it can be recognized as the last, purely high performance classical sports car Chevrolet manufactured. It was not until recently when Chevrolet brought back the name ‘Stingray’ in its 2014 model. Many were very pleased to see the model name brought back, and more excited to see the improvements since the 1976 model.
