1998 Food Truck Donated to Rhode Island Community Food Bank

Guest Blogger: Jacqueline Martel

This year we had a very interesting donation of a 1988 Chevrolet Food Truck! This unique donation was from the Rhode Island School of Design, a local prestigious art college. The donation generated a substantial sum of support for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. Rhode Island may be the smallest state, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have the biggest hearts!

The Rhode Island School of Design had one of the most unique forms of donation towards the food bank, a food truck itself! What better way to promote the depletion of widespread hunger than by recycling the source of food sales?

This truck helped feed countless hungry college students as a food truck, and thousands of hungry Rhode Islanders as a vehicle donation!

Rhode Island Community Food Bank

The RI Community Food Bank was established in 1982. They strive to distribute millions of pounds of food through donations for those in need. In order to meet the high demand for food donations, the RI Food Bank solicits donations from the public as well as purveyors in the food industry such as supermarkets and local growers. With its spacious facility and willing staff, the food bank distributes about 200,000 of food to its donors each week through its 155 member agencies.

Aside from monetary donations, the food bank is always accepting nutritious, non-perishable food items. Their network of agencies delivers these donations to Rhode Islanders in need.

For every dollar donated, the RI Food Bank has the ability to acquire three meals for someone in need.

They are also accepting vehicle donations year round!

It doesn’t have to be a food truck to help feed those in need! We can accept vehicles of just about any size or condition.

Gloria Gemma Foundation Charity Spotlight

We at Car Donation Wizard are proud to work with the Gloria Gemma Foundation, a local organization that supports those affected by breast cancer.

The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Research Foundation supports our local community, in Rhode Island, southern Massachusetts, and eastern Connecticut. Their headquarters are nearby our Middletown office, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

The Foundation was established in 2004, to honor the memory of Gloria Gemma, a brave and loving wife and mother of nine who lost the fight to cancer in 2002. The organization started as a simple website with information for cancer patients and their families. Over time, it grew into a substantial organization that provides free, holistic programs to heal mind, body, and spirit.

There are a wide array of programs offered, including:

  • healthy body classes, ranging from gentle yoga to nutrition and cooking
  • support groups that provide emotional support and community
  • Pink Spirit Program brings breast cancer education to students and local businesses

The monthly event calendar shows all free programs and is a great resource for individuals, families, and communities.

The Run/Walk Series is a great way to actively support the Gloria Gemma Foundation, and the next one is coming up on September 30th, 2018!

We Share Hope Charity Spotlight

Car Donation Wizard connects donors with amazing charities both global and local. Today’s spotlight is on a Rhode Island-based charity, We Share Hope.

We Share Hope

This nonprofit has a simple mission, which is sharing resources with those in need. We Share Hope had a humble start 10 years ago in 2018, with the two founders giving out bread from the back of a station wagon.

We Share Hope is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, and currently has four employees and over 75 volunteers. They’ve grown significantly over the past decade, spreading hope as they grow.

There are three active Empowerment Centers, in Warren, Riverside, and Warwick.

These Empowerment Centers are open 3-4 days a week to the public, and customers can exchange small donations for groceries and household items. They are essentially food banks, but they do ask for $3 or $5 dollar donations.

We Share Hope partners with over 59 New England-based organizations to ensure their food and non-food items are distributed to those in need. These organizations include Providence Rescue Mission, East Bay Food Pantry, Barrington High School, and Aquidneck Island Rally for Recovery.

The organization relies on volunteer work and private donations rather than federal funding. Even if you aren’t nearby to volunteer your time, you can always assist with a car donation

Happy 4th of July!

4th of july 2018

The Fourth of July came in to existence in 1776, with the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. The thirteen colonies were declared the United States of America, and thus the birth of our nation. The legal separation of the thirteen Colonies from Great Britain actually occurred on July 2nd, but due to revisions of documents it was delayed two days and therefore we celebrate on the fourth.

The Fourth of July has always been a favorite holiday of mine. It’s the perfect time of year to enjoy festivities outdoors with friends and family. Fortunately for us, Rhode Island has a LOT to offer during tourist season….especially being on the island! The 4th falls on a Wednesday this year, which will make most of the festivities available a few days earlier on the previous weekend.

The calendar below shows the dates and times of fireworks displays across the state.

Importance of World Water Day to Car Donation Wizard

World Water Day (#worldwaterday) occurs on March 22nd annually and holds a lot of importance to us at Car Donation Wizard.  Sponsored by the United Nations, this day is “about focusing attention on the importance of water.”  This day is of particular importance to Car Donation Wizard because all of our employees live and work next to the ocean, in the city by the sea, Newport, Rhode Island.  We see firsthand why everyone needs to take responsibility in taking care of this amazing part of nature.

Global Struggle for Clean Water

It is not just about having a beautiful ocean, lake or river to live by, work in and enjoy.  Today over 2 billion people live without safe drinking water at home.  That is almost 30% of the world’s population that has their health, education and livelihood directly affected by this global water crisis.  There are issues directly related to demand, availability, quality and environmental impacts.
