Donate a Car to Special Olympics Rhode Island and Help Athletes Thrive Year-Round

by | Feb 25, 2026 | Charity Spotlight

When people think about supporting Special Olympics Rhode Island, they often picture cheering crowds, medals, and powerful moments on the field. But behind every competition is year-round training, coaching, equipment, and logistics that make those moments possible. One meaningful way to support that work—especially as we head into spring programming—is by donating a vehicle.

A car donation to Special Olympics Rhode Island turns an unused vehicle into funding that supports free sports training and athletic competition for more than 4,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities across the state.

Empowering Athletes Beyond the Playing Field

Special Olympics Rhode Island allows children and adults with intellectual disabilities to discover and share their strengths and abilities with others. Through year-round sports training and athletic competition, athletes gain more than physical fitness—they build confidence, courage, friendships, and a sense of belonging that extends into every part of their lives.

As one of Rhode Island’s most dynamic programs, Special Olympics Rhode Island provides more than 1,600 training and competition opportunities each year and hosts over 40 statewide tournaments across 20 official and demonstration sports. These experiences are offered free of charge to athletes and their families, ensuring that financial barriers never stand in the way of participation.

Why Vehicle Donations Matter—Especially This Time of Year

Late winter and early spring mark an important transition period for Special Olympics programs. As February gives way to March, planning ramps up for upcoming training cycles, competitions, and statewide events. Donations during this time help ensure athletes are supported consistently—not just on competition day, but every day they train.

February is often associated with heart-centered giving and community care, while March highlights inclusion, ability, and participation. A car donation during this season is a practical way to put those values into action by supporting programs that foster joy, health, and human connection.

How Donating a Car Supports Special Olympics Rhode Island’s Mission

The mission of Special Olympics Rhode Island is to provide year-round sports training and competition in Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. These programs help athletes develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and build meaningful relationships with teammates, families, and the broader community.

Vehicle donations help generate funding that supports:

  • Year-round sports training and competitions
  • Statewide tournaments and athletic events
  • Coaching, equipment, and program logistics
  • Inclusive opportunities that extend well beyond the playing field

As part of the global Special Olympics movement—authorized and accredited by Special Olympics, Inc.—Special Olympics Rhode Island plays a critical role in advancing health, inclusion, and community engagement at the local level.

A Simple Way to Make a Lasting Impact

Donating a car to Special Olympics Rhode Island is designed to be easy and donor-friendly:

  1. Complete the donation form online or call (888) 755-5485.
You’ll provide basic information about your vehicle and pickup location.

  2. Schedule a convenient pickup.
A local towing agent will contact you within two to three business days to arrange a pickup time that works for you.

  3. Receive your tax receipt.
After the vehicle is sold, you’ll receive a tax receipt by email for your records.

Whether your vehicle runs or not, your donation can help fuel opportunities for athletes across Rhode Island.

Continuing a Legacy of Inclusion and Opportunity

Special Olympics was created by the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation with a vision of a world where people with intellectual disabilities are valued, healthy, and fully included. Special Olympics Rhode Island carries that vision forward every day by creating opportunities for athletes to improve, compete, and achieve their personal bests—on and off the field.

By donating a car, you’re helping ensure that these opportunities remain accessible to every athlete, regardless of ability or circumstance.

Turn Your Vehicle Into Something Bigger

If you have a car you no longer need, consider turning it into something meaningful this season. A vehicle donation to Special Olympics Rhode Island supports training, competition, and community for thousands of athletes—and helps build a more inclusive world, one opportunity at a time.
