Donating your car can be a generous way to support a cause you care about. But not all programs are created equal. Before you donate, here are some key questions to make sure your gift is both impactful and hassle-free.
What paperwork do I need?
Typically the only paperwork needed at the time your vehicle is picked up is a clear, original title for your vehicle. If it’s not in your name or missing, don’t worry, Car Donation Wizard offers state-specific help to guide you through the process of transferring it or requesting a duplicate.
Does my car need to be drivable?
It does not need to be drivable. As long as it has at least 3 inflated tires and is tow accessible (not in a garage or blocked in) we should be able to accept it for donation and pick it up!
What happens after my car is picked up?
We will sell your car wholesale to either a licensed dealer or at an auction in the U.S. The proceeds will then be returned to the charity of your choice. If your car is sold to a dealer, they may take some parts and recycle the rest of the vehicle. However, if it is sold at an auction, the dealer may resell the vehicle at retail to a new customer.
You can track your donation through the end of the process and find out exactly where your vehicle ends up through your Donor Console! After your donation was submitted, you received a confirmation email with details about accessing your Donor Console. Not sure where that email ended up? When do I get my tax receipt?
You will get your tax receipt by email within 30 days after your vehicle is sold at auction or to a licensed dealer.
If your vehicle sells for under $500, you can use the email you receive when doing your tax return to claim up to $500 on your taxes. If your vehicle sells for anything above $500, the email we send you will state to call us and provide your SSN so we can mail you out an IRS 1098-C tax form so you can claim the full sale amount on your tax return.
How much does the charity actually get from the sale of my vehicle?
With most vehicle donation programs, the charity typically receives between 15 and 35% of the gross selling price to fund their charitable mission. Car Donation Wizard consistently delivers between 75 and 80% of the gross selling price for car donations back to the charity. We take our responsibility to bring the highest return back to the organization very seriously, and we are proud to run the most efficient vehicle donation program in the country.
How can I protect my donation?
- Choose a legitimate 501(c)(3) charity
- Confirm how much goes to the charity
- Transfer the title directly to the charity or agent—don’t leave the buyer line blank—follow title instructions sent to your email
