March of Dimes Car Donation Review
“It was his favorite charity because he was helped as an infant with a complicated surgery that was beyond his parents means.”
This truck was well-loved by my sweet husband who passed away last summer. He was a big fan of March of Dimes; it was his favorite charity because he was helped as an infant with a complicated surgery that was beyond his parents means.
His family was living in Troy, Ohio when he was born in 1954. He was initially diagnosed as mongoloid, and had been born with cranial stenosis. The attending doctors told his parents that he would not live past 2 or 3 years old, and that they should prepare themselves for this.
However, their family doctor, Dr. South, did not believe this diagnosis. He said that he “saw a certain light that baby’s eyes” and observed that he was normal in every other way. Dr. South advocated for an invasive and (at the time) not often performed surgery that would separate his fused skull plates and allow for the normal growth of the brain. The operation was successful, and he grew up as a very bright child who lived a fine life, and was a remarkable person who made an impression on everyone he met, up until his passing in September of 2024.
His mom wrote and had published a story about this surgery, and I believe it was shared on one of the daytime television shows (Rosemary Clooney or Paul Dixon, etc.).
Thank you so much for saving him for me; we were high school sweethearts an would have been married 50 years in March of this year. We were lucky enough have two fantastic daughters and a business that will hit 50 in 2026.
Thank You, Patti!

This was my first ever car that I got while in college. I planned to buy a cheap, used car with my savings but my mom surprised me by chipping in a bunch to help me get a new car. I named her Eustace and she carried me the 6+ hours to and from college for every vacation. She witnessed first love, graduation, and moved to the big city with me. She was tough, facing blazing summers, snow plows burying her for days, and alternate side parking. She drove my fiancee and I to our first house and then our wedding. She came and went to the NICU dozens of times until our beautiful baby was ready to come home months later. I was so nervous driving with our baby in the back seat for the first time, but Eustace was as steady and reliable as ever. She’s retired from our family now, but can hopefully still do some good for others.
