A few weeks ago, my Mini Cooper went to Mini Cooper heaven. Yes, it died on me. Smoke billowed from the exhaust just as I pulled into my parking structure. When the little red needle reached its highest point, panic overcame me. I knew immediately that another costly repair was on the horizon. Or maybe not. But when I went to my mechanic the next day, he gave me the bad news. Yep, this repair would be an expensive one. I had to weight the pros and cons of doing the repair work or cashing it in. After sleeping on it, I knew that it was time to say the final “good-bye.” Over the years, my Mini gave me a lot of joy; it was fun, sporty, and cute. I loved putting the top down in the summer, the way I could maneuver in and out of small parking spaces and, of course, the low gas mileage. But, the years took a toll on my Mini and it was time for me to let go. Letting go of a car can be difficult. It is one of life’s major attachments. It goes everywhere with you, literally. The thought of parting with my Mini made me sad. And then the obvious popped into my head – I could donate it to the Arthritis Foundation! Happiness filled me up! My Mini Cooper still had some good times ahead! Plus, giving a car to a good cause, like the Arthritis Foundation, makes it so much easier to let go. While my Mini Cooper gave me a lot of joy over the years, my greatest joy was donating it to the Arthritis Foundation! When it’s time to say that final “good-bye”, make it a joyous one and consider donating your car to the Arthritis Foundation! Feel the joy!

This was my first ever car that I got while in college. I planned to buy a cheap, used car with my savings but my mom surprised me by chipping in a bunch to help me get a new car. I named her Eustace and she carried me the 6+ hours to and from college for every vacation. She witnessed first love, graduation, and moved to the big city with me. She was tough, facing blazing summers, snow plows burying her for days, and alternate side parking. She drove my fiancee and I to our first house and then our wedding. She came and went to the NICU dozens of times until our beautiful baby was ready to come home months later. I was so nervous driving with our baby in the back seat for the first time, but Eustace was as steady and reliable as ever. She’s retired from our family now, but can hopefully still do some good for others.
