The Car: 1960 Ford Thunderbird

Maine Public Radio

The Ford Thunderbird is an iconic American car, and the very first model was produced in 1955.

Those early cars were initially two-seaters, which certainly was nice for zipping around, but didn’t quite meet the requirements of the standard American family.

In 1958, Ford decided to expand the Thunderbird – literally – by adding a backseat. These so-called “square-birds” were wildly popular, and even named Motor Trend Magazine’s Car of the Year. Not so square after all!

Thunderbirds made their mark in popular culture as well. Fans of the Beach Boys may recall the track “Fun Fun Fun,” about a girl’s adventures in her classic T-bird.

Donate for #GivingTuesday!

Today marks #GivingTuesday 2018, a day of giving and collaboration powered by social media. It is estimated last year $274 million dollars was raised online in response to the sixth annual #GivingTuesday.

#GivingTuesday also kicks off the spirit of giving season. Are you thinking of doing something different than a monetary donation to charity this season? Celebrate #GivingTuesday by donating your car to charity and we will return 80% of every gross dollar raised back to our charity partners. We work with some of the nation’s best charities, visit Car Donation Wizard to make your charity choice. #GivingTuesday is a great day to remind us as Americans the importance of giving to those in need and the thousands of non-profit organizations around the world that spend 365 days a year working to make a difference. Your car donation can help build a new home for a family, help find a cure for cancer, or be put to use with humanitarian efforts worldwide.  Donating your car to such causes is a great way to give something back. Not to mention the environmental impact donating your old vehicle has on our planet!

2018 will present new opportunities and challenges with the tax reform, but based on more people and organizations aware of the success of #GivingTuesday since its start in 2012, it is likely we will see more dollars raised than last year. And, contrary to some predictions, people are in fact still donating, and not just for the tax deduction. ARS President, Joe Hearn’s Wreckonomics Special Charity Spotlight, looks specifically at car donation trends and why they are here to stay. Our largest charity programs continue to grow in 2018 and we predict that growth to continue. Ready to be a part of the #GivingTuesday movement today? This commercial bucket truck is part of the well known Ford F-series. Ford produced the first series of this truck in 1948! These trucks have been the best selling vehicle overall in the US since 1986. They are currently producing the 13th generation.

The F-350 is only available for commercial use, and is a part of the ninth generation of this iconic Ford series.  This particular vehicle is a bucket truck, which has a range of commercial uses. Some of the functions include electric utility, construction, forestry and landscaping, harvesting fruit, and fire rescue.

This F-350 had an even better use — the owner donated this vehicle to March of Dimes.

The Charity: March of Dimes

Did you know that around half a million babies are born with birth defects, or prematurely in the US? March of Dimes fights premature birth, and works to support the health of all mothers and babies.

March of Dimes actually began with President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s struggle with polio. This led to the creation of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, which we know today as March of Dimes. They successfully cured polio, and now fight against premature birth and birth defects.

March of Dimes works locally, with community programs in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. These programs also focus on marginalized populations, who are more likely to experience health inequities.

They also have six research centers dedicated to ending prematurity, in the US and in England. These combined efforts of interdisciplinary research and community outreach help reduce risk and care for moms and babies, but they still need help.
