In 1985, the United Nations established the first Monday of October as World Habitat Day. The day is intended to reflect on the state of our communities and on the basic human right of all to adequate shelter. The Day is also reminds the world that we all hold the power and the responsibility to shape the future of of the human habitat. The theme for World Habitat Day 2021 is Accelerating urban action for a carbon-free world.
This year’s global observance will be hosted by the city of Yaounde, Cameroon. Cities and towns are responsible for about 70% of global carbon dioxide emissions with transportation, buildings, energy, and waste management accounting for the majority of urban greenhouse gas emissions. The future of the planet depends on national and local governments, communities, academic institutions, and all relevant stakeholders working together to create sustainable, carbon-neutral, inclusive cities and towns.
Last year’s theme was Housing for All: A Better Urban Future. There were 69 events celebrated in 42 countries and 58 cities and the global observance was hosted by the city of Surabaya, Indonesia.
