World Children’s Day is annually celebrated on November 20 to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children’s welfare.

History

World Children’s Day was originally established as “Universal Children’s Day” in 1954. Why November 20th? On November 20, 1959, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. On November 20, 1989, the UN General Assembly also adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Since 1990, World Children’s Day marks the anniversary of when the UN General Assembly adopted both the Declaration and Convention on children’s rights.
