History
At the end of World War II, Arthur Ringland and Dr. Lincoln Clark approached 22 American charities with an idea to send food packages from the United States to loved ones in Europe. On November 27, 1945 the charities organized the Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe.
CARE took possession of 2.8 million “10-in-1” military food rations. These rations became the world’s first CARE Packages® and were delivered to Le Havre, France six months later.
CARE focuses on empowering women and girls by promoting gender and social equality. Their work in developing countries addresses a range of topics including food security, economic development, job training, health, and water and sanitation.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization has helped more than 60 countries, including the United States. CARE has provided health and hygiene kits, installed handwashing stations in public places, and provided clean water in communities where it is scarce. The organization revived the CARE Package in the form of donations sent to a global community and gift cards sent to frontline workers.
