About The Nebraska Humane Society
The Nebraska Humane Society started in 1875 and originally focused on protecting both animals and children. In the 1940s, NHS became the only organization in the Omaha, Nebraska area that was designed to protect animals. The organization is the fifth oldest and one of the largest humane societies in the United States.
NHS provides training classes, education programs, a behavior help line, and a pet food pantry for residents in the Omaha area. The Nebraska Humane Society offers community programs designed to help pet owners and to keep animals out of shelters. Project Safe Pet provides free, temporary housing to animals that are companions of domestic abuse victims until their owner is able to leave an abusive situation. Animeals is a program that delivers pet food to senior citizen pet owners who are unable to leave their homes.
The organization sees more than 30,000 animals every year on its 13-acre campus which is made up of 150 staff members and 600 volunteers.
