Did you know that February 26th is World Spay Day?

World Spay Day is an annual day to spread international awareness and take action on overpopulation on pets. The North Shore Animal League is  the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization. Their Spay USA program is the nationwide referral network that connects pet owners with affordable spay and neuter services.

With so many pets in shelters awaiting adoption, one may wonder how so many contribute to overpopulation by breeding. There are just not enough good homes for the increasing number of kittens and puppies coming into the world. Put it into perspective, if you are breeding and able to find great homes for your litter, you potentially took away the opportunity for a handful of homeless pets at the shelter to be rehomed.

By spaying or neutering your pet you are contributing to the solution of overcrowded shelters. This prevents euthanasia of pets without homes. Many veterinarians and animal welfare professionals are helping to support this cause by providing vouchers and discounts to encourage pet owners to spay or neuter their pet.

There are health benefits to spaying and neutering as well.  It can give you more time with your pet, reducing the risk of certain infections, diseases and cancers that both cats and dogs are prone to. Reports also conclude that pets are better behaved after the sterilization. Most owners notice reduced aggression in pets after sterilization.

This February is the perfect time to spread awareness on the topic, or even take action yourself by spaying or neutering your pets. Visit the Spay USA website for further information. They also provide a searchable database where you can find low cost spay/neuter programs!
