A 1972 Jaguar E-Type Series III has been donated to WHYY through the Car Talk Vehicle Donation Program. WHYY is a public radio station located in the Greater Philadelphia area. The donor is very generous, as this vehicle was a top of the line performance car first introduced in 1971. Without a doubt, it is a special car as there was only about 15,000 units of this model produced. In fact, just about 7,000 of those are the “2+2” variety, which this donation is.

The 1972 Jaguar E-Type Series III was introduced with a new 5.3 L twelve cylinder engine, uprated brakes, standard power steering and options for an automatic transmission, wire wheels and air conditioning. The brand new Jaguar V12 engine was developed for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the world’s oldest sports car endurance race that is annually held in France. It is equipped with four Zenith carburetors the engine produced 272 horsepower, massive torque and a zero to 60 acceleration of less than 7 seconds. Consequently, the new V12 engine became a powerhouse of the 70s and 80s for Jaguar. Upon its release, Enzo Ferrari called it “the most beautiful car ever made”.

The British newspaper, The Daily Telegraph, ranked the Jaguar E-Type first on their list of the top 100 “most beautiful sports cars of all time.”  The model is also featured in the Austin Powers movies that parodied 1960’s London.

The donor had been just the second owner of this particular car, owning it for over 40 years before donating it. At auction, the car was able to haul in a generous value for WHYY.
