Layli’s 2000 Honda CR-V
Donated to WBUR
WBUR Car Donation Review

“When I heard about WBUR’s car donation program, I knew this is where my beloved bright red Honda CR-V would find its final resting place!”
My father died from glioblastoma in 2006 down in Florida, where he was a community college president about to retire. He had just bought a new (to him) bright red Honda CR-V as a second car right before his diagnosis. At the time, this was my favorite car. I still remember watching that car sit idle in his garage while he was dying, and I always associate it with his final days. A few years later in Georgia, where I was a professor at the time, I received a teaching award. I had been a carless single urbanite for a few years, but newly married, I decided to get a car with the cash that came with the award. The first day I went to car shop, I saw a bright red Honda CR-V in the back corner of a dealer’s lot. The minute I saw it, I knew it was mine. Driving it always kept me connected to my Dad, and it carried me through my move to Massachusetts, where I took my first higher ed administration job, carrying on the legacy of our shared career path. My new marriage came with teenage step-kids, and the Honda became their learn-to-drive car, extending its life to the very end. When I was growing up, my family always listened to NPR morning and evening, especially Morning Edition and All Things Considered – and the same is true of my family today. It is a continuing tradition! Thus, when I heard about WBUR’s car donation program, I knew this is where my beloved bright red Honda CR-V would find its final resting place!
Thank You, Layli!
